"Originally known as Matas, the Mataso were governed by one chief. Later, missionaries of four denominations introduced Christianity to the island. This caused the Matas to divide into four separate tribes. Matas, Nokom, Siliwie and Kiraem. each tribe gained a new chief and thus the single heart of the Matas was divided into four.
